Improving Quality Control in Industrial 3D Printing

Projects

3D printing quality control has been on Royal3D’s eyesight for quite some time. As our portfolio of materials and applications continues to grow, so does the need for a more advanced and reliable quality monitoring methods. Our team has been exploring new ways to improve how we approach print quality control across the 3D printing production.

That is why for the past year, we have been developing an exciting new project: the Interlayer Control System. This is a system that uses thermal cameras to measure and log the interlayer temperatures of the print. It provides real-time insight into how heat is distributed, allowing us to monitor the temperature consistency. By continuously monitoring the temperature of our prints, we gain better control over layer adhesion. Not addressing this issue could lead to weak bonding and deformation which are hard to detect visually but present a significant impact on the quality of the print.

The wide variety of materials we are working with presents an additional challenge during the printing process, as different materials respond differently to temperature. What works well for PP for example may not be suitable for another material. By recording and analyzing this data for each print, we can better understand material-specific behavior and refine our printing parameters accordingly.

Ultimately, the interlayer control system helps us reduce misprints, minimize material waster, and shorten lead times. At the same time, it enables us to deliver parts that consistently meet quality requirements.
