When Engineering Meets Art
At Royal3D, we transform ideas into tangible experiences and our collaboration with Atelier 81 is a perfect example. By their request and design, we turned five custom sneakers into a bold, large-scale installation in the heart of Rotterdam, blending engineering, 3D printing, and urban storytelling.
These weren’t ordinary sneakers. They were engineered in five unique sizes: 0.9m, 1.8m, 2.7m, 3.6m, and 4.5m, each carefully optimized for 3D printing.
This wasn’t just scaling, every object was individually engineered to maintain structural strength, surface quality, and design consistency, ensuring that every element could withstand the demands of its environment while staying true to the original vision.
Material choice was equally important. The sculptures were printed in transparent, durable material, making it possible for Atelier 81 to incorporate lights inside. The 3D printed shoes were engineered to withstand weather and environmental conditions, all while maintaining their visual clarity and can be found on the facade of the EPOS primary school in our very own Rotterdam.
This project showcases what Royal3D does best: combining engineering, additive manufacturing, and creative vision to bring ambitious ideas to life. From the first concept to the final installation, every step was guided by precision, scalability, and a desire to create something truly remarkable. This project further proved that 3D printing fits perfectly real-world, large-format installations. .
We are proud to see these sneakers take their place in Rotterdam’s urban landscape, where innovation meets art, and engineering meets imagination.
