In industrial 3D printing, ensuring consistent print quality remains a significant challenge. Variations in temperature during the printing process, especially between layers, can lead to poor layer adhesion, internal stresses, warping, and ultimately misprints. That is why Royal3D has developed a system that allows to follow the quality control of production. This system uses thermal camera to measure and log the interlayer temperatures of the 3D printing process. By integrating this solution into existing 3D printing operations, Royal3D introduces a solution for reducing misprints, improving layer adhesion, and ensuring printed parts meet quality requirements.

Intended Use

The Interlayer Control System is intended for 3D printing companies that are working with installations equipped with a PLC, which can return the XYZ-coordinated location of the nozzle. The system uses thermal cameras with a 160 × 140-pixels, making it suitable for industrial monitoring applications.

Importance

Monitoring the print temperatures will give insights into better control over layer adhesion and reduce the amount of misprints. Using the Interlayer Control System will help in minimizing material waste, shortens lead time, and further decreases the need for post-processing and manual quality checks. It will further enhance the quality requirements prints should meet.

Challenge

Our experience taught us that different materials respond to different temperatures. This further creates a challenge for companies like us that work with a wide range of materials. For example, a temperature profile that works well for PETG might not have the same response with PP. Collecting and analyzing thermal data helps companies better understand material-specific behavior and optimize printing parameters accordingly.

Installation

On-site installation of the Interlayer Control System takes approximately four steps:

Steps 1-3: dedicated to installing the hardware and software and fully integrating the system to the existing printing system.
Step 4: calibrating the system and ensuring accurate measurements and reliable performance.

Our system operates on a dedicated computer to guarantee stability and performance.

Maintenance

The Royal3D Interlayer Control System is fully automated and the hardware does not demand any further maintenance. Nevertheless, in order to ensure optimal functionality, the calibration requires regular checks.
